Essence is a hospital only plan from KeyHealth. In 2026 it costs R2 393 a month for the main member, R1 918 for an adult dependant and R826 for a child.
Best for: Members wanting the cheapest possible unlimited private hospital cover, comfortable relying on PMBs for GP/specialist visits and with no day-to-day fund.

What Essence covers
- Hospitals you can use
- KeyHealth DSP network — Netcare and Life Healthcare hospitals nationally, plus selected Mediclinic hospitals in Western Cape, Bloemfontein and Polokwane. Same shared network across all 6 KeyHealth plans, confirmed directly from the official 2026 brochures.
- In hospital
- Unlimited private hospital cover at 100% of agreed tariff via DSP hospital (30% co-payment at non-DSP hospital); state hospitals unlimited. Varicose vein surgery, facet joint injections, rhizotomy, reflux surgery, back/neck surgery (incl. spinal fusion) and joint replacement covered at PMB level of care only. Specialist/anaesthetist services unlimited via DSP. Oncology capped at R205,500/family/year. Medication on discharge R695/admission.
- Day-to-day
- None — no MSA or day-to-day Fund. Out-of-hospital GP/specialist consultations covered at PMB level of care only; pathology has no benefit except for PMB conditions.
- Chronic medication
- Category A (CDL) conditions unlimited, subject to reference pricing/protocols and compulsory registration on the Chronic Disease Risk Programme. No Category B (non-PMB) chronic cover on this plan.
- Maternity
- 12 antenatal visits (GP/gynae/midwife) + dipstick urine test; 2 pregnancy ultrasounds; short-payments/birthing fees covered to R1,570/pregnancy; antenatal vitamins R2,650/pregnancy; antenatal classes R2,650 (first pregnancy); RSV vaccine once per pregnancy; private ward for 3 days for natural birth. KeyHealth Smart Baby Programme support included.
- Dental
- Conservative dentistry via the DENIS network: 1 check-up/year, 4 intraoral X-rays/year, 1 scale-and-polish/year, fillings (1/tooth/2 years). In-hospital dental (removal of impacted teeth) via DENIS pre-authorisation, R2,060 co-payment per admission. No plastic dentures benefit.
- Optical
- No dedicated optical benefit — not offered on this plan (confirmed absent from the official brochure; no eye test, materials, or OTC reading-glasses line item, unlike the other 5 KeyHealth plans).
- Mental health
- Psychiatric hospitalisation limited to R26,100/family (in-hospital benefit only); out-of-hospital psychiatric treatment at PMB level of care only.
- PMBs (prescribed minimum benefits)
- Full PMB cover (legally required)
- Emergencies
- Covered at any hospital (PMB); ambulance services unlimited via Netcare 911 (082 911), subject to protocols.
- Gap cover
- Yes — day-to-day GP/specialist cover is PMB-level only and there is no optical benefit at all; several surgical procedures (back/neck, joint replacement) are also PMB-level only.
